We read the district’s 121-page report, and it appears to be biased against restoration of honors/AS classes. We are alarmed because we have been working in good faith with the district to try to get real data with rigorous analysis, but it doesn’t appear in the report. Student Trustee Jacob Yuryev (Carlmont) believes the report portrays an inaccurate picture of our schools after advanced classes were eliminated. SUHSD’s report is linked and Jacob’s review is here. We are disappointed the board did not ensure a neutral report and did not have any participation in the review of the data. It is clear we should have advocated for an external contractor to conduct the research and prepare the report.
Send an email to the Board at board@seq.org, asking for a robust community input process for the SUHSD Strategic Plan. To date, they have held one parent/student input session which was not communicated widely, only offered in person, and most parents/students do not know their input is needed. Since the board has stated they will be relying heavily on the Strategic Plan as the “north star” for addressing the AS/Honors Policy questions, it is CRITICAL that parents/students have ample opportunities to provide feedback. Feel free to share your feelings about the November 15 Board meeting as well.
If Woodside is your districted high school, please reach out to Principal, Karen Van Putten, to provide feedback regarding their active conversations to eliminate AS Chemistry and replace it with AP Chemistry. As always, if emailing, please also copy the Board, Superintendent Leach and the Student Trustees with a copy to us if you’d like - kvanputten@seq.org, board@seq.org, 808660@seq.org, 810560@seq.org, suhsdstudentsfirst@gmail.com.
Share our last email and ask friends and neighbors to sign our online letter to the Board. To date, almost 1200 people have signed; we will continue to provide the board with emails from supporters. This affects our entire community and we will continue our public awareness efforts

The primary job of the board is to approve policy and set direction for SUHSD.
Let’s remember that elections matter. Please stay engaged with us for additional next steps.
